Ablaze with love of God, many founders of religious congregations in the West consummated their lives in spreading the flame.Similarly in the Eastern part of the world also, a sparkle appeared and grew into a great flame, lighting up all around. The Congregation of the Holy Family was thus initiated with an unmistakable signature of God.
Born and brought up in Indian soil in the middle of the 19th century, Blessed Mariam Thressia  was inflamed by the compassionate love of Jesus, paving the way for the redemption of thousands. This courageous daughter of Kerala who was filled with love of God and compassion towards the neighbor dedicated her whole life to God, serving the family which is the basic unit of the society and the 'domestic church'.

After prolonged acid tests, as if it were a divine intervention, Bishop John Menachery made a canonical visit of the House of Solitude on 13th may 1914. The bishop was pleased with the lifestyle and spirituality of Thressia and companions in the House of Solitude. He discussed with Rev.Fr.Joseph Vithayathil, the parish priest and the spiritual director of Bl.Mariam Thressia and decided to give hierarchical recognition to the house of solitude and make it the first house of the new Congregation of Holy Family.

It was the Blessed Mother Mary who entrusted the mission of the family apostolate to Bl.Mariam Thressia as the apostolate of her congregation, and both she and Fr.Joseph Vithyathil accepted it and lived it in its wholeness. By this time the fragrance of the holiness of the Mother and Fr.Joseph Vithayathil had spread everywhere and many came to join the CHF. The attractions of the world never stopped the candidates. Many pious and godly parents decided to send their daughters to the CHF. What Mother Mariam Thressia accomplished in half a century, would have taken centuries for others to achieve. She nursed the sick and prepared hundreds waiting to die, for a dignified death. She was a great comfort for many who were helpless and needy. She built three convents, two chapels and two primary schools, when there were only 55 members with her. Mother Mariam Thressia had been widely known as a mystic, a stigmatic and above all a family apostle.

Now the CHF tree has spread its roots to 4 continents and many countries where 2000 sisters follow her path of love to Jesus Christ by loving and caring the needy through 200 convents. The CHF has established three convents in Chennai, the first one being in Keeelkatalai where they run an ISO certified school , and others are at Gowrivakkam and Velachery where an old age home, ladies hostel and counseling centers are maintained. Apart from the main role of family apostolate, the Congregation of Holy Family has been in the forefront, serving in the fields of education, counseling and medical care for the needy with dedicated service by the highly committed sisters.
Mariam Thressia Illam   - Home for the Aged Destitute Women.

The visionary zeal of Bl.Mariam Thressia, a pioneer in the field of family apostolate inspired us to start a home  for the destitute  to serve the god alive among us. Her inspiring words  "no one knows how God rewards those who help the destitute and the deprived ", motivated us to start this home, "Mariam Thressia Illam". It has no foreign or state aid but the daily needs are met though small donations, subscriptions and sponsorships of food by the benefactors on occasions of birthdays, marriages..etc. It is administered by a Director who is a nun belonging to the Holy Family congregation, assisted by other sisters and 3 domestic helps.

The beneficiaries are aged destitute women who have nobody to care for them or are abandoned by the family. They become inmates here either through referrals or are picked d up from the streets. All the inmates are provided with free food, clothing, medicines and stationary items, and stay along with the nuns. .  First aid is given at the house itself and hospital treatment is provided according to the requirement.

An Appeal :-
Dear friends,
If you  wish to extend a helping hand to these destitute, you are welcome to do so, by donations or through sponsorships. Sponsoring an inmate can be done by donating Rs-1500/month or Rs-10000 per annum or by life sponsorships of Rs 1 lakh. You may also share your joy and blessings from God by donating as you wish, on occasions of birthdays, wedding, anniversaries.etc.

We hope to hear from you and assuring you our sincere prayers along with the inmates of Mariam Thressia Illam.
